Third Grade Newsletter GIFTED GAZETTE 2.1 Oct. 16th - Oct. 20th What we’re learning this week… Spelling, Vocabulary, & Test Schedule Reading: Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor This week we will… read chapters 5-8 visualize (create pictures in our minds based on the text we read) make inferences (use clues/background knowledge to figure out what the author is NOT saying) Language/Writing: combine simple sentences using conjunctions use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills write “Halloween Monster” persuasive pieces Spelling: Test on Friday Math: This week we will… measure elapsed time and tell time to the nearest half and quarter hour master facts with “Fluency Friday” speed test Project of the Week (P.O.W.): due Friday Research: We will begin a long-term research project on dog breeds. Each child will choose a breed and use print and electronic resources to locate needed information and ultimately write a non-fiction report. Start collecting some info. to bring to school, see the attached recommended websites to research. This is going to be “Doggone Fun!” We are looking forward to learning from Dr. Grasperge, our parent animal expert! On-Level Spelling: Door, dart, fort, morning, carpet, ford, core, cord, spark, award, smart, charge, worm, argue, stormy, bore, guard, ward, warp, barnyard, screech, shrimp, throat, charcoal, forecast Classical Roots Vocab.: Lesson 10 Review pages 42-46 Active, activity, actor, actually, enact, officer, official, officiate FRIDAY Test Schedule: Reading: Reading comprehension test T-shirt Book Report and brief oral presentation about your book! This is a graded project. (You may bring notecards or refer to your graphic organizer, but please DO NOT read word-for-word.) Vocabulary: Lesson 10 test Language: compound sentences and mentor sentence skills Spelling: Math: Test on Measurement (liters, milliliters, grams, kilograms, telling time and elapsed time) Use pre-test to review! Fluency Test for remaining facts A note from the teachers EEK! Welcome to the 2nd nine weeks! We hope to see you at the Fall Gala on Friday night. Your t-shirt book report is due this FRIDAY, October 20th. Remember to complete the graphic organizer that was attached to the direction sheet and bring it to school for your presentation to our class. We’re looking forward to seeing your creativity on display! Storybook Character Day is Tuesday, 10/31. We hope our gifted kiddos choose to show their quick wit and creativity by dressing in a clever “pun costume” OR other character costume of their choice. MOBY MAX!
