Barrier’s to Implementation of Sustainable Transport Policies in Ireland to Tackle Climate Change

Key Facts-Ireland’s Transportation Bet 1996-2006 Ireland’s GDP doubled followed by an increase in population by 17% and a drastic increase in employment by 48.9% (Central Statistics Office, 2007a) In the year 2007, there were approximately 1.9 million private cars registered in Ireland, making the highest number on record for that year Currently, Ireland is one of the lowest active transport county compared to other European countries (Office et al., 2012) “For a majority of the population in Dublin, It is now impossible to live a normal life without the motorised vehicle”

In the year 2009: Smarter Travel Policy was framed In the year 2009: Smarter Travel Policy was framed. This was the first sustainable transport policy to tackle climate change, traffic congestion and to encourage model shifts Further to this wide range of policies were reframed that focus on projects such as parking taxation, shifting towards alternative energy sources such as EVs and improving public transport facilities In the year 2016, Project Ireland 2040-National policy framework and transport strategy for the Greater Dublin Area 2016-2035 Ireland’s Approaches Towards National Strategy on Sustainable Transportation

Conclusion and Recommendation’s Identified Barrier’s Financial Issues Spatial planning and settlement pattern Cultural Barriers Lack of Identified Progress Poor Communication between general public and higher authorities Conclusion and Recommendation’s The political authorities need to take a practical steps towards reducing the increased motorised vehicles Need to emphasize issues on housing crisis and expensive cost of living in the city centre that forces the general public to shift further away from the cities, which in turn increases the distance of commuting One of the reasons for poor implementation of the well set policies is that the long-term goals have no short-term indicators of success- As a result, the general public would find it hard to believe in the success of a policy that is set for 20 years of time span
