MT 2 Chemical Bonds Terms

Valence Electron an electron in an outer shell of an atom that can participate in forming chemical bonds with other atoms

Ionic Bond When electrons are transferred between two ions with opposite charges. One will be positive (cation) , one will be negative (anion) It is a bond between a Metal & a Nonmetal

Positive Ion and Negative Ion Positive Ion- Atom that lost electrons (cation) Formed by a Metal Negative Ion- Atom that has gained electrons (anion) Formed by a Nonmetal

Covalent Bond a chemical bond between non-metals formed by the sharing of one or more electrons.

a bond between metals creating a sea of electrons Metallic Bond a bond between metals creating a sea of electrons

Lewis Dot Structures a way of representing atoms or molecules by showing electrons as dots surrounding the element symbol.
