Year 2 Summer Term Week 5 Lesson 4 Shape and Space Year 2 Summer Term Week 5 Lesson 4

Today we will be learning to: use words for direction and movement recognise quarter, half and whole turns know that a quarter turn is a right angle give instructions.

Mental Activity True or false?

Work with someone from a different group. You will need paper and pencil. Fold the paper in half. On one half write ‘True’ and on the other half write ‘False’.

Decide if this can be ‘True’ or ‘False’. 1. Jay had ten cakes. He gave three to Sally and had five left. Write on your paper and explain why.

Do the same for these. 2. Ten 10p coins make £1. 3. A circle has one corner. 4. 2, 4, 6, 9 is a sequence of counting in twos. 5. There are two ways of using coins to make 2p.

Today we are going to describe movements and directions. Main Activity Today we are going to describe movements and directions.

Look at the classroom clock. What words describe the movements of the hands?

What does clockwise mean? What does anticlockwise mean?

What is a quarter turn? What is a right angle?

I will walk across the classroom. Say when I am: walking in a straight line making a quarter turn making a half turn making a whole turn.

Where can you find mazes? What is a maze? Where can you find mazes?

Today you are going to make a maze. You must make a maze using straight lines and quarter turns.

Group Work Sit in mixed ability groups. You will need glue, scissors and strips of squared paper. Make a maze using the squared paper. Think about your start and finish points. Check your maze when it is done.
