10th Grade English Friday 1 Nov. 2013 Agenda: Debrief Notes for Rough Draft Assess Student Samples Using Scale Self Assess Using Scale Hand-Write Editing Changes Return Introduction Feedback Turn in Rough Draft Homework: 1st and 2nd: Meet in Lab on Monday. 3rd Period: Meet in our classroom on Monday. We’ll have the tablets here. Edit essay over the weekend. Final draft due Monday, Nov. 4th.

Rough Draft Debrief Spell out any number under 100 Spell Caesar correctly Write in present tense (pretend events from the play are happening right now) Replace “you” or “we” with 3rd person pronouns like “people” “adults” “Romans” or whomever you imagine when you visualize whom you mean by “you.” Spell out contractions “aren’t” “doesn’t” “can’t” Thesis should include: title, author, arguable point, and 3 ways you’ll prove the arguable point

Thesis Statement Prompt #1: In Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, language is a powerful weapon, and in the hands of a skilled person, it is used to manipulate others as evidenced by the speeches of Cassius, Decius, and Antony. Prompt #2: In Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, logos proves to be the single most effective rhetorical strategy as evidenced by the logical appeals of Cassius, Portia, and Antony. Prompt #3: In Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Antony’s funeral speech proves to be the most effective speech in the entire play thanks to his persuasive strategies appealing to logos and pathos.

Evidence Sandwich Cd: Cm: Topic sentence relating to the thesis statement. CX: What’s the context of the quote? How would you quickly “set it up” so the reader understands its place in the plot and its larger context in the play? Cd: The actual quote you’re using. Cm: The commentary and analysis of how this supports the “thesis”, which says, essentially, that X theme is evident in the play.
