Presentation transcript:

Bell ringer Risk Assessment Food tests Identify a strategy to test for unknown substances (which test would you carry out first?)

Lesson objectives carry out tests for reducing sugars and non- reducing sugars, the iodine test for starch, the emulsion test for lipids and the biuret test for proteins to identify the contents of solutions

Tests for biological molecules 1. Carefully follow the instructions to carry out tests for biological molecules. 2. Use your knowledge from practical 2.1 to identify the substances in practical 2.2 3. Write a full lab report on practical 2.2 Use a hot plate instead of a Bunsen burner! DISPOSAL Solutions for the following tests can be washed down the drain with EXCESS WATER: Starch, Protein, Lipids DO NOT WASH AWAY THE BENEDICT’S SOLUTION  Collect it in the waste container! Safety Wear eye protection. Take care when using heating apparatus. Dilute sodium hydroxide solution is an irritant. If it contacts the skin, wash off immediately with plenty of water. Ethanol is highly flammable. Keep it well away from sources of ignition.
