‘Roadmap to Renewal’ for unions Becky Wright, Director Unions 21

Big Picture for Unions

Young Worker Face to Face more effective way Digital to help members communicate with each other Membership fees need to look more flexible or differentiated Stronger focus on long term value to careers Consider the adaption for evolving labour market Value on industrial role, less so on political unless reflects ‘ordinary member’

Resolution Trust info

Based on recent trends & demographics membership on course to fall to 16% by 2030 Arguably this is a pretty rosy scenario – doesn’t factor in any big shifts due to ‘shocks’ (e.g.) automation or a recession Membership rates may also fail to grow with age at the same rate as in the recent past

Membership among under 35s would need to nearly double during 2020s to stop overall decline due to boomers retiring Blue bars answer the question: “how much higher does young people’s membership have to be to stop overall membership rates falling over the next 15 years?”

How do we respond?

Recognise the role of leadership to enable change. Make the persuasive, everyday case for collective voice/bargaining. Shape structures to reflect and support the needs of (potential) members and reps. Collaborate and invest for the future.

Role of Leadership Build from the ground up Invest in lay leadership Development in workplace leadership Invest in lay leadership

Shape structures to reflect what members need/want Beneath the activist layer: understanding your membership Create service packages and structures which reflect members needs right now, not thirty years ago

Collaborate for the future Sharing functions Operating cross borders Recognise we’re in a data age Share best practice
