Forecasting Weather. What is it ?? Technology Meteorologists need to measure various atmospheric conditions : air pressure, humidity, precipitation,
Air Pressure. High and Low Pressure Areas High pressure causes air to sink Usually results in several days of clear sunny skies Air rises in low pressure.

Presentation transcript:

QQ: Which kind of pressure system(s) brings sunny, fair weather? Which kind of front brings quick, hard precipitation that only lasts a short while? What type of pressure system(s) is associated with cooler weather? Which front is associated with warm air that is trapped above 2 cold fronts? Occluded Front Low Pressure High Pressure Cold Front

Today’s Objective: I can predict the weather using raw data collected from a weather station.

Working with your team of meteorologists, transfer the data from the observation stations to the map. Make a wind barb to show wind direction, speed, and cloud cover. Place the atmospheric pressure, temperature, and weather symbols around the center as described in the handout.

On your map, find the observation station with the highest atmospheric pressure. Just above it, write a BLUE “H” (for high). Find the observation station with the lowest atmospheric pressure. Just above it, write a RED “L” (for low).

southwest to northwest and the temperatures decrease suddenly. Find the low pressure area. Draw the symbol for the cold front. It will be between stations where winds change from southwest to northwest and the temperatures decrease suddenly.

Draw the symbol for a warm front Draw the symbol for a warm front. It will be between stations where winds change from east to southwest and temperatures rise suddenly.

Draw the following isobars on your map: 1008 mb, and 1024 mb. Label.

Draw a dotted line around all the locations where precipitation has fallen. Shade the precipitation area with a colored pencil.

After completing the rough draft of your weather map, transfer the information to a larger map. Choose a few major cities to include and label with their weather station data. Transfer the isobars and high and low pressure areas. Make your map colorful and attractive. You want your audience to enjoy watching your weather.
