Background Sharing The G8, otherwise known as the Group of Eight, (formerly Group of Six and also Group of Seven) is a forum, created by France in 1975, for governments of six countries in the world: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In 1976, Canada joined the group (thus creating the G7). In becoming the G8, the group added Russia in 1997. In addition, the European Union is represented within the G8, but cannot host or chair.

Background Sharing The G8 is an assembly of world leaders who meet annually to discuss global issues.  Each year, the G8 holds a Leaders’ Summit, in which Heads of State and Government of member countries meet to discuss and attempt to reconcile global issues.  Although the G8 is best known for its annual summits, it works throughout the year to tackle important contemporary topics such as the economy and climate change.  The G8 discusses and creates global policies.  However, adherence to these policies is not obligatory, and other countries can decide whether or not to obey.

Background Sharing 52 people were killed in the terrorist bomb attacks in London on 7 July, 2005. The city of London which had been celebrating their successful Olympic bid went into mourning. This was the first suicide bombing to take place in Western Europe. The terrorist group al-Qaeda claimed responsibility.

The host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics will be Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, announced at the 121st IOC Session held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2, 2009. They are scheduled to be held from August 5 to 21, 2016. There will be 35 competition venues mainly in Barra da Tijuca, but also in three other zones: Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã.

It will mark the first time a South American city hosts the event, the third to host in the Southern Hemisphere (and the first time in a Southern Hemisphere country other than Australia), and also the first time a Portuguese speaking country hosts the event. These will be the first Summer Olympic Games since the Sydney 2000 Olympics not to be held in the host nation's capital city and the second Olympics Games in Latin America, after Mexico City in 1968.

Thousands of "cariocas" cheer and dance in Copacabana Beach after their hometown was elected to stage the 2016 Olympic Games. "Today I have felt more pride at being Brazilian than ever before," the 63-year-old president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said. He said. "We're not a second rate country, we're a first rate country." "We are going to have to sleep less, think more and work more," he said. "Now our term of reference is going to be work, work, work -- work for Brazil to do better than any other time in its history."
