Georgia Performance Standards SSWH1 The student will analyze the origins, structures, and interactions of complex societies in the ancient Eastern Mediterranean from 3500 BCE to 500 BCE. a. Describe the development of Mesopotamian societies; include the religious, cultural, economic, and political facets of society, with attention to Hammurabi’s law code. b. Describe the relationship of religion and political authority in Ancient Egypt. c. Explain the development of monotheism; include the concepts developed by the ancient Hebrews, and Zoroastrianism. d. Describe early trading networks in the Eastern Mediterranean; include the impact Phoenicians had on the Mediterranean World. e. Explain the development and importance of writing; include cuneiform, hieroglyphics, and the Phoenician alphabet.

Monday This week’s GPS Opening Activity Procedures: Every Monday, you will write the OA questions (label each day) and answer using your textbook. You will do this for each day and turn in on Friday. Today’s OA: p. 28 Interact with History What should be the main purpose of laws: to promote good behavior or punish bad behavior? Do all communities need a system of laws to guide them? Can you think of any society that does not have a system of laws? Think about our justice system in the U.S. Are our laws fair and is justice applied equally?

OA Current Event Assignment Ch. 2 Sec. 1 & 2 Discussion Homework: Expect a reading check this week on sections 1 & 2! Current events due Friday.

Thursday OA: Re-read the section on Egyptian culture on p. 38 In a paragraph, describe Egyptian religion. How did they feel about the afterlife? How did they achieve the opportunity to actually get to the Other World? Agenda: OA Reading Check Ch. 2 Sec. 1 & 2 Ch. 2 Discussion Homework: Current event #1 due tomorrow. You CANNOT turn this assignment in late. NO EXCUSES!

Friday OA: After reading Ch. 2 Sec.3, write a paragraph comparison of how Sumerians, Egyptians, and the Harappan civilizations made use of their environment. Identify which group you think made better use of what they had. Agenda: OA: Due today Current Events: Also due today Ch. 2 Disc. Homework: Finish your Ch. 2 study guide and be sure to completely read the chapter. Have a great weekend!
