Low-Cost Fundus Camera Status Update

Software - Status/Plan Beginning development on external system, will port to ODROID once it is ready. Architecture designed by Tuesday 2/9 Done. Cecilia & Casey working on this. Complete software by 3/11. Test connection of software with other system components by 3/18. Port software to ODROID by 4/1. Bug fix as needed while testing entire system.

Hardware - Status/Plan All ordered hardware is on hand. ODROID XU-4 not sending HDMI signal to display. Casey has tested, unsure where the problem originating Technical Support in Korean Emailed Korean speaking students at RIT for translation help, large response Meeting evening of 2/3 to call technical support and have translation done Decision on how to proceed by 2/12 at the latest May have to repurchase from a local distributor as it is out of return period Plan: Ordering replacement ODROID from american distributor, should have by end of next week 2/19

Illumination and Flash Infrared lighting required to align camera with pupil while avoiding constriction Beam Splitter to give coaxial light instead of liquid light guide. Have beam splitters to test with. Initial tests say it should work, getting data to support. Shutter w/ LED vs. just LED flash Chose to use LED flash See next slide

Flash - Shutter Concerns Shutter speed would need to be variable to control exposure length. Would be a mechanical system powered by a spring Many moving parts. Concern over vibrations impacting focus Difficult to get consistency in movement of many parts with the software. Many things need to occur in a specific order over very short time frame Requires a current draw at least as large as the LED flash would. Shutter will increase the overall size of the system Shutter could block fixation points depending where placed. Shutter requires the IR and LED lights to be positioned in different locations instead of together.

Flash - Design Decision Using an LED for a flash instead of a shutter creates less system complexity/moving parts to coordinate at once if a Standard LED can not flash fast enough. Cost difference between different LED’s is relatively more, but compared to system and budget a small cost ($10 vs. 5 cents)

Illumination and Flash - Brightness Use luxmeter to attenuate light intensity to around 1,000 lux (1,000 lumen/m2) Determined by comparing other FDA-approved fundus cameras LED output can easily be modulated to keep within specifications.

Illumination Pathway Exact positioning of these items can be determined once the lens are setup. Goal by 2/26

Optics Status/Plan Possess a 20D lens currently Team feels this is a large part that we all need to work on Now know illumination pathway. Can work on optics. Design lens array/verify with Ted Kinsman by 2/26 Build lens setup and verify proper magnification/field of view being obtained by 3/4 Combine system with light/camera by 3/11

Mechanical Base Preconstructed Base FDA - approved provided by Prof. Sisson FDA - approved Allows for large and fine movements Commercially available

Mechanical Base Ctd. Removable base allows the system housing & camera to be mounted and moved closer/further from the eye to ensure proper focus.

Mechanical Design - Status/Plan Design for the removable mount to attach camera to moveable base made. Needs to be 3D printed. Industrial Design Student designing external casing to house all components - completed by 3/21
