Explanation: Quote: Winston’s attachment to his mother exists even thirty years after his mother's death. Since Winston never got to know the real reason as to what had caused his mother’s death, till this day he still wonders. He questions his mothers death. Why did this happen? This is one of many points in the book when Winston begins to reflect about the past regarding his family, and his mother specifically. "He was out in the light and air while they were being sucked down to death, and they were down there because he was up here." (p.29)

Explanation: Quote: In the novel, Winston rarely remembers any memory about his mother. He has a sense of guilt due to him blaming his mothers death on himself. He feels that he is the reason why his mother has passed away, over whatever she had done for him. In feminism, there are two genres, one being Madonna and the other being a Whore. Winston’s mother was a perfect example of a Madonna. She was an amazing mother who had sacrificed everything for his son. She was a tall, beautiful rather silent woman who did everything for her children. Explanation: Quote: Having a loved one, being attracted or being loyal to somebody are considered as potential dangers for the Party. Party wants all the physical and psychological interest of the society. However, Prole women working as prostitutes aren’t considered and treated as real women. Party doesn’t see much of a danger and potential of anyone from outer or inner party being attracted to a Prole prostitute. Winston’s affaire with an old prostitute proves how unlikely the affection is between them, and Prole women are portrayed as they are only used for sex. “It was dangerous, but it was not a life-and-death matter.” “The unforgivable crime was promiscuity between Party members.” (p.60)

Explanation: Quote: The ideology was to kill womanhood of women in the outer or inner party (no make-up, no perfume, the red sash of the Junior Anti-Sex League around the waist, no sexual desire, etc.). Love affaire becomes impossible with women who is a member of the Party because of imposed ideology of the Party. The act is turns into an ugly and dreadful action, which eliminates successful performances and affections. “The sexual act, successfully performed, was rebellion. Desire was thoughtcrime.” “When I saw her in the light she was quite an old woman, fifty years old at least. But I went ahead and did it just the same.” (p.62 - 63)

Explanation: Quote: “You’re only a rebel from your waist downwards” This quote shows how Julia only rebels the Party by having sex and does not believe that a widespread, organized opposition existed or could exist. Julia only wants to enjoy herself and rebel and outwit the Party in her own way, she is not interested in opposing the Party in any other way. On the other hand Winston is extremely interested in the Party and their history; he wants to know what they are currently doing and what have done in the past. Julia has no interested in the principles of Ingsoc, doublethink, Newspeak words or events that happened in the past, while Winston has immense interest in those subjects. In the end one can say that Julia is selfish because she only rebels the Party for her own pleasure and benefits and does not have any concerns about taking down Big Brother or being a apart of a revolution. “You’re only a rebel from your waist downwards” (p.137)

Explanation: Quote: This quotation shows how Julia has so much passion, knowledge and experience about the emotion of love. The people of Oceania do not know what love is and have never experienced it before, however Julia seems to be an expert on the subject and understand the power and effect that love can have. She explains to Winston how they can torture you as much as they want, however the emotion of love is so strong that it will not be affected by the torture or other things that they will do to you. Julia has had sex with many Party members and therefore has gained a lot of experience and knowledge on the subject, which she passes on to Winston.  “It’s the one thing they can’t do. They can make you say anything but they can’t make you believe it. They can’t get inside you.” (p.146)

Explanation: Quote: This quote shows that woman are only respected based on their willingness to participate in aggressive sexual intercourse. Winston does not like Katherine at all because she is just another active supporter to the party. She only slept with men to reproduce and assist the part by supplying more supporters. She had completely demolished any fun there was to intercourse, and she treated it as a simple method to enhance her relationship with her family. Winston calls her a jointed wooden image because he felt she was as worthless as one. A wooden image does not show any action and is simply the result of the combination of various wooden works, thus he believes Katherine is one as she is only one more generic individual created by the party. It is clearly evident that Winston only values a female based on the quality of the sexual acts she performs, as it is the only way he classifies woman. This can be seen with the relationship he develops with Julia. Winston disliked all the impassionate woman of the party, and really wanted to feel loved. “To embrace her was like embracing a jointed wooden image”. (p.67)

Explanation: Quote: This quote shows that woman are only valued based on sex, as it shows how Winston has deteriorated her value to complete zero. Winston is basically saying that the promiscuity and indiscriminateness of all the woman in the party annoyed him. Although the performance of a pleasurable sexual act was against the Party, Winston always wants to have the perfect sex. He wants to have pleasurable sex and wants to make love in such a spectacular way that it is worth his time. All Winston wanted was to break down that wall of virtue and have proper sex. Winston also shows that woman are only valued based on the sexual acts they perform, and not their appearance. Winston shows this when he says that Katherine is very pretty, but it is her lack of sexual instincts which holds her at bay. In this quote he is completely trashing Katherine in a sarcastic tone, by saying that she only interacted with him in a sexual way to create new lives. “She had two names for it. One was 'making a baby,' and the other was 'our duty to the Party‘ “. (p.82)
