Today’s Objectives You will review vocabulary words by taking notes on definition, synonyms, sentence from the selection, and by drawing a picture. You will illustrate mastery by creating sentences correctly using three of these words You will review previous STAAR scores in order to measure current level of aptitude by reporting category/section You will choose your learning groups for the unit by discussing current strengths and weakness in order to form a strong learning community

Vocabulary Practice #2 due Friday September 11th Today’s Homework Vocabulary Practice #2 due Friday September 11th

Delusion (n): a belief that is not true; a false idea Sentence: The ghetto was ruled by neither German nor Jew; it was ruled by delusion (pg. 12). Synonym: dream, fantasy

Fatigue (n.): Definition: the state of being very tired; extreme weariness Synonyms: exhaustion, tiredness Sentence: We had transcended everything—death, fatigue, our natural needs (pg. 87).

Indifferent (adj.) Definition: without interest or concern; not caring Synonyms: apathetic, uncaring, aloof Sentence from selection: “I shall remove your gold crown, that's all," he said, clearly indifferent (pg. 52).

Insignificant (adj): too small or unimportant to be worth consideration Sentence: He had mastered the art of rendering himself insignificant, invisible (pg. 3). Synonyms: unimportant, trivial

Vocabulary Sentences Take 5 minutes to write at least one of your vocabulary sentences You may write one sentence for each word or use three words in one sentence or two words in one As long as you use three of the words, you will get all the credit TRY TO USE THEM CORRECTLY PLEASE Check your grammar and spelling—if it is not up to par, your sentences will not be good enough for the wall!

Anaphora Poem Now, you will practice using the rhetorical strategy of anaphora by writing your own “Never Shall I Forget” poem Think of a significant moment in your life that you have not forgotten, and you believe will be engraved in your mind forever Recall a good or bad experience (either will work) Begin each line with “Never shall I forget… Be specific and choose your diction wisely to convey your feelings Do not be afraid to let your reader feel your emotion Check the rubric to ensure you get a good grade!

STAAR Blueprint Follow along as I explain each part of your English II STAAR test Highlight and take notes as necessary Put this in the “Growth Chart” section of the folder

Assessment Folder Expository Essay: *Remember: The essay is double-graded (scored by two people) so divide the score at the top in half to determine your true score *Please place this essay into the brads and write it on the table of contents page *If you were not at SW last year, I don’t have your writing image—don’t worry about it! *Look at your score. Do you know why you earned it? (If it’s a 2, you probably were lacking organization and/or specific, detailed examples!)

Short Answer Responses A score 3 is exemplary! You have BIG ideas a great assertion and perfect text evidence A score 2 is considered passing on the short answer If you earned a score 1 you were probably Missing text evidence or Text evidence was weakly linked If you earned a score 0 You probably answered the question INCORRECTLY

Growth Plan Review your scores from last year Overall passing score was a 3750; Advanced was a 4691 This year the passing standard will go up to a 3825; Advanced to a 4831 Growth Plan Color in the number you have correct (I wrote it on the top of the column) For passing categories color it one color and for non-passing color it the second color so you can see right away where you need work Passing for revising, editing, informational and literary texts is 8 correct Passing for the paired multiple choice is 5 Passing for short answer is a score 2 Passing for the composition is a score 3 (6)

Quickwrite What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? How will you work to strengthen them? What is your overall goal for your grades in English II Pre-AP this year? What is your goal for the STAAR exam?

Learning Groups In this class, we will be working in learning groups For this unit, you may choose your partners Write down 1 person for partners 2 people for triads 3 people for groups of four Take 5 minutes to determine your group mates and write their names on your notecard Make sure they write you down too! **The groups should match!**
