Cosumnes Oaks High School Academic Planning for 2019-2020

Don’t be absent! Course selection online inputting for 2019-2020 will be held during advocacy on Tuesday, February 26th! Today you should begin planning which courses you will select for next year. As you go through this presentation, make notes of the core and elective options that are best for you.

For this lesson, you should have: Pre Course Selection worksheet DRAFT Course Selection form COHS Grad Requirements sheet (blue) Your transcript

Agenda: Fill out the pre-course selection worksheet Fill out the DRAFT course selection form After advocacy today, if you are unsure about your courses, speak to your current teacher about what he/she recommends REMINDER: You might need to apply or attend a special meeting for some programs

Getting Ready to Graduate… Have you met the requirements?

Do you want to apply to a 4 year college? the minimum you need…

Special Notes for Seniors… Your counselor has already reviewed your transcript and will “pre-select” some of your courses for you. If you need to retake a class it will be assigned as one of your electives. You will be placed into Public Speaking if you have not completed your Speech Proficiency by the end of your junior year. If you took Honors Science 8 in middle school, it is recommended that you complete the Biology-Chemistry-Physics sequence.

Pre-Course Selection Worksheet: The top half pertains to appropriate math course selections, and the bottom half pertains to the remaining course requirements (English, World Language, Science, Social Science and electives) The following slides will provide instructions for HOW to complete this worksheet. Completing this will prepare you for course inputting on Feb 26th…so DO NOT LOSE THIS SHEET!

Mathematics Math I Math II Applied Math Math III Problem Solving A The typical course sequence goes as follows: Think about your math grades this year …What level do you qualify for? Math I Math II Applied Math Math III Problem Solving A Pre Calculus Stats/AP Stats Calculus B/C Calculus A/B Senior math options: -Senior Math Review -Business Finance -CADD Seniors may go from any of these courses to any approved “senior math option”

Math Selection Highlight or circle the course you are CURRENTLY in this year: Example: You took Math III this year…

Math Selection Then look at the options in the column below. These are your options for next year… Based on the grade you earned in your math class this year, select the appropriate course. For example, if you took Math III this year and earned an ‘A’ or ‘B’ you could take Pre-Calculus, Pre-Calculus Honors, Statistics or AP Statistics next year. *You might want to ask your math teacher for their input between now and Feb. 26th

Mathematics If you still have questions about your math placement for next year talk to your math teacher.

English You may choose: (highlight/circle one) English 12 –or– AP English 12 (Literature) Note: Recommendations regarding AP sign ups

World Language If you are currently enrolled in a World Language class and have earned a C or better, you can advance to the next level. Ex: You completed Spanish II this year with a ‘B’…enroll in Spanish III next year Write this in the blank space provided Spanish III

Science Based on your math level and A-G requirement needs, select the appropriate course and highlight/circle it: Note: Recommendations regarding AP sign ups

Social Science You must sign up for BOTH Economics AND Government. If you choose AP for Gov’t you do not have to also select AP for Economics. *Select ONE *Select ONE Note: Recommendations regarding AP sign ups

How To Choose Electives Review the information/instructions in the boxes above. Write down the names of any classes you may need to retake Then, use the list on the back of your worksheet to explore possible electives. Select 3-6 electives you are most interested in and write them in the space provided.

12th grade Elective Options **This can be found on the back of your worksheet. ** Highlight/Circle electives you might be interested in taking

Honors/Advanced Placement Program Questions to consider before you sign up for an Honors/AP course. Students should expect 2-6 hours of homework per week per Honors/AP class. Think about other weekly commitments that might limit your time to focus on multiple Honors/AP classes. What are your outside commitments? Do you play a sport? Are you a member of a school club or academy that takes time out of your day/week? What will your class schedule look like? While every effort is made to balance AP classes across terms, there is the potential that you will have a term with multiple Honors/AP classes that cannot be balanced due to scheduling conflicts. Are you prepared to complete the summer intro assignment? (most AP classes will have a summer intro assignment) If the answer to these questions is “yes”, what is your next step? Select the class during course selection (February 26th!) Pick up the textbook and summer intro assignment in May before leaving for summer break.

AP Info Night TONIGHT! February 5th from 5:30-7:00 Opening session in the PAC regarding COHS AP classes and AP tests Break out sessions with AP teachers for the classes you are interested in taking next year. This is your chance! Even if you have previously taken AP classes, you need to come learn the specifics about the AP courses for next year. Your AP teachers will share course expectations and requirements so that you can decide which course is right for you.

DRAFT Course Selection sheet: Transfer your worksheet selections to your draft course selection sheet. This DRAFT sheet will stay with your advocacy teacher to guide you when you input your classes into Student VUE on February 26th.

Choose your Required Courses Each student will be enrolled in 80 credits per year. ******************** In this example: Required credits=50 Elective credits=30

Write in the electives that you selected on your worksheet Choose your Elective Courses Write in the electives that you selected on your worksheet Rank these by 1 being your first choice, 2 being your second choice etc. Remember, if you choose a course you may be scheduled into it even if it is your last choice.

Course Descriptions and Prerequisites If you need course information, all course descriptions and prerequisites can be accessed from the EGUSD website. http://www.egusd.net/academics/course-catalogs/

Turn in to your advocacy teacher: DRAFT Course Selection Form STOP! Do this now: Turn in to your advocacy teacher: DRAFT Course Selection Form Your transcript You will receive these back on February 26th to use when you input your courses online.

Final Thoughts: StudentVUE Review your grades and credits Verify that you can log on to the StudentVUE System so that you are ready for February 26th. Review your grades and credits Go over your Course History this week on StudentVUE to check your grades and to determine if you qualify for the courses you are interested in. Review your Pre Course Selection Worksheet Review your worksheet with your parents/guardians, teachers or counselor. Make note of any adjustments so that you will be ready on February 26th for final inputting. Questions or concerns? If you are worried about your graduation progress or the classes you need to be eligible for college, make an appointment to speak with your counselor! Talk to your current teachers about his/her recommendation for which class you should take in that subject. All Course Selection forms and presentations can be accessed from the main page of the COHS website.
