Chapter 90C NC Recreational Therapy Licensure Act Effective Oct 2005

WHY? Protects public by ensuring practitioners properly educated and trained. By: Establishing guidelines and requirements Monitors practice Monitors practitioners for “compliance”

Compliance Obtain license Comply with ATRA Code of Ethics Maintain continuing education to remain up to date with healthcare and RT

Before License is issued Do not use “CTRS” This implies you are credentialed to practice RT in NC and you are not until licensed!

Application Process Online (preferred) Hard copy “Hybrid”

Before applying Read Chapter 90C and the Rules Order Transcripts Get NCBRTL Clinical Performance Appraisal and Summary Reference Form(CPASRF) Form signed at end of Internship. Do not leave without this completed even if you are not applying for license now.

No emailed Documents NO EMAILED DOCUMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED Except Official transcripts from School Registrar’s Office can be emailed directly to NCBRTL becky@ncbrtl.org

Hard Copy Applications Application are online under Documents and Forms Takes longer to review Still will have to complete profile online Wont receive $ receipt More expensive to mail and copying costs Requires MO or Cashier’s check PO not always reliable No online Check Status

2019 Changes Website updates HOPEFULLY complete date available before May Graduation Will be able to upload CPASRF, Photo and Exam results Transcripts will still need to sent from school Registrar’s office because must be OFFICIAL

Name Change If your name is different than on your transcript, please submit Name Change Form and govt. issued document for name change ie marriage certificate or divorce decree If your name is different than one in your email please identify what name your license is in or include license number

Online Application

Log In Keep what email you apply with: This will be your User name Keep assigned Password, you will be able to change this to anything you would like once you are licensed but during process keep this one assigned to you

Application Review Process Licenses are issued once completed application and Documents are received. So plan ahead, apply early Order transcripts to be sent to NCBRTL (becky@ncbrtl.org) -must be Official, no student copies -only accept emailed from school’s registrar 'office NCBRTL Clinical Performance Appraisal and Summary Reference Form -completed and signed by agency Internship supervisor

Review Process Staff review once complete, posted on website within 48 hours Questionable or inclusive application are referred to the Board -BOARD REVIEW IS THE LAST WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH

Check Your Status Log in under “application” Check Application Status -missing items will be listed here

To add or correct Log back in and go to “Check Status” This is not updated automatically, it may take a few days

Current Online Process Documents must be mailed in Exam Passage CPASRF Photo (if not uploaded) Official Transcript (may be emailed from School Registrar’s office)

Application Must be completely filled in No “see Transcript” Employment (only need to complete if position in healthcare or setting where RT may be offered) Must complete Employment Form Must enclose job description

Coursework Yes, you must fill your courses in! Have a transcript with you. General Recreation courses are NOT RT content courses Heath and Human services can be any course related to health Ex. Sociology, Psychology

Exam Passage Successful exam passage notification letter from Prometric Copy of NCTRC certificate Not email from NCTRC or screen shot of NCTRC’s website

CPASRF NCBRTL Clinical Performance Appraisal and Summary Reference Form -completed and signed by agency Internship supervisor -NOT NCTRC’s Form -NOT University’s Form Cont.

CPASRF Clinical Performance Appraisal and Summary Reference Form. May be sent separately from Agency Internship Supervisor Out of state internships, CTRS only (just enter n/a for state license number Not University’s, Not NCTRC’s Forms NCBRTL will not accept Overall ratings of 2 Does not meet Expectation or below.

Official transcripts Emailed from school registrar Mailed Official Copy does not have to be “sealed” One from each school attended (Some Community colleges do not email transcripts so order early!)

Photo Upload or mail COLOR, professional photo, (similar to passport photo) If mailed in please attach to hard copy application or write name on back

Prefer Hard Copy? Print out under “Documents,” Forms on home page Still will have to complete online profile after you are licensed Last ones to be approved online…so if you are in a hurry….

Use of “CTRS” NC Department of Justice views use of “CTRS” is implying you are credentialed to Practice RT in NC and you are not…YET So DO NOT use “CTRS” before your license is issued!!!! Do not use in your Email signature Do not use on job applications, resume DO NOT PRACTICE/WORK before LICENSE IS ISSUED

Employment IF you take position before license is issued DO NOT PRACTICE RT!!! No matter what your job title is. Do not do ANY Part of the APIE Process

Employment Form Complete in reference to what you are doing at the time Include copy of signed Job Description Do not reflect what you have done in the past or anticipate doing in the future

Common Questions? Mail documents separately? YES Pay online, but complete hard copy? YES Accept emailed Documents? NO (except Transcript from school) What do I put for “NCBRTL Use”?- NOTHING that’s for NCBRTL’s use What if Intern supervisor is not LRT (out of state) – put Nothing or N/A What if I am not employed –Put nothing or N/A

Occasional Issues Name change since graduation? Submit Name Change Form and copy of Marriage certificate or Divorce decree (check name on Transcripts) Some one else pays your license fee? Sent email so that we credit your account

Notification Licenses are posted online within 48 hours of Board Review Licenses are mailed within 1 week

Once you are licensed Attend NCBRTL Compliance and Ethics Training during your FIRST Year of licensure Start earning Continuing education (20 HOURS every two years) Proudly use “LRT” credential! Keep contact info current on website!!!!

If you are not approved Your application remains ”open” for one year You may submit missing documents, and or additional information ex. New test results Course description or course syllabus of when course was taken Documentation for name change CPASRF rating change Transcript for missing coursework
