Being a Faculty Leader

Faculty leaders are often asked to make decisions on the spot. When is talking to just the Faculty Leader enough? What needs to go back to your Faculty ? How can you avoid "summer surprises"?

Who Represents the Faculty? Decision making – What are the Rules? What Laws, Policies and Procedures apply? What are the Existing Positions on specific topics? Local State Opposing

Decision making – Yea or Nay Criteria What kinds of decisions could you be asked to make? What must go to the Faculty ? When do you say this is my feeling, but I must go back to the Faculty for a position? Balancing Autonomy with Process – What positions currently exist in Can a leader postulate a position without consulting the Faculty . Objective criteria for each option. (Who represents the faculty?) Non-ten-plus one When do you say “This is only my feeling I must ask the Faculty ” When do you say – I can not take a position or make a comment without consulting the Faculty When are you unable to say anything Other

How do you prepare for the surprise that will require knowledge, representation, and organization? How do you make a plan that drives action not reaction?

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! List some summer surprises.

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! "One of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency." -Arnold Glasgow Rule #1 – Don’t be Surprised, Predict It! What could we have planned for?

When Surprises Happen – Separate the issues Resolve the Surprise Avoid Process Changes On-The-Fly Document Problems and solutions Advocate for clear processes and procedures Exercise shared governance

A Good Planning Process: Means NO Surprises! Promotes Accountability! Provides Clarity and Fairness! Need Not Be Complex! Generates Evidence!
