Lithuania Pazaislis monastery PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC FEATURES Pazaislis Monastery and the Church of the Visitation form the largest monastery complex in Lithuania and the most magnificent example of Italian Baroque architecture in the country. TIPE OF SITE Cultural monument AREA COVERED 300 sq. m HISTORICAL/SCIENTIFIC/ARTISTIC INFORMATION In 1832 the monastery was closed by the Russian authorities and later converted into an Orthodox church. In 1915-1918 when the Orthodox monks had fled a German war hospital was established in the monastery. After 1920 the ruined monastery returned to Roman Catholics and was restored by sisters of the Lithuanian convent of St. Casimir. DATING Founded in 1662. The main construction continued until 1674 and resumed in 1712.

Lithuania Pazaislis monastery ACCESSIBILITY During the summer, take trolleybus N°9 or N°12 all the way to the monastery. If you go at any other time you'll need to travel to the last stop and walk further along the road in the direction of the trolleybus. The complex is well signposted on the left. On a warm day you can combine a visit with a refreshing dip in the Kauno Marios. FACILITIES Nuns still run the place, and a peaceful guest house and one of the region's finest and most coveted restaurants „Montepacis”absorbs part of the complex.
