How to Make Ionic Bonds

Ionic Bonds Remember the Octet Rule? How many electrons do atoms need to be happy and stable? Ionic bonds are created when electrons are transferred (given away or taken/accepted) Ionic bonds are created by combining metals and nonmetals

Directions 1. Find your elements on the periodic table Potassium Bromine 1 2 14 15 16 18 13 17 1. Find your elements on the periodic table

Potassium = K Bromine = Br 2. Write the symbol for each element 1 2 14 15 16 18 13 17 Bromine = Br 3. Look at the group number to determine the number of valence electrons

K 4. Draw the valence electrons on a counter-clockwise direction for each element Br

K Br 5. Figure out the number of electrons gained or lost K wants to lose 1 electron 5. Figure out the number of electrons gained or lost K Br Br needs 1 electron

6. Draw arrows to show the transfer of electrons Br K 7. Write the charges for each element and the chemical formula for the reaction K1+ + Br 1-  KBr

Want to see another? Let’s try Magnesium and Iodine magnesium= Mg iodine= I 1. Find the elements on the periodic table 1 2 14 15 16 18 13 17 2 valence electrons 7 valence electrons 2. Write the symbols 3. Look at the group number to find the valence electrons I Mg loses 2 I gains 1 4. Draw the valence in electrons in a counter-clockwise direction Mg I 5. Figure out the electrons gained or lost 6. Draw the arrows to show the transfer Mg2+ + I1- 2  MgI2 7. Write the charges and the formula

Magnesium and oxygen Magnesium oxide Now you try . . . . To name ionic bonds, take the name of the metal as the first word. For the second word, take the name of the nonmetal and add –ide on the end Magnesium oxide

Now you try . . . . Sodium and chlorine Sodium chloride

Now you try . . . . aluminum and chlorine Aluminum chloride

Ionic Bond Homework For each set of elements: Draw the Lewis structures for each atom. Draw arrows to show the transfer of electrons. Write the charge for each ion and the chemical formula. Complete the following 1. Potassium + Iodine 2. Sodium + Oxygen 3. Lithium + Nitrogen 4. Potassium + Fluorine 5. Calcium + Chlorine 6. Lead + Sulfur
