New Flora of Sussex Current status Spring 2013

Firstly, Thanks Go To: The Flora Working group would like to thank: All the people who have submitted records in 2012. Your valuable contributions to the field-work are vital to the progress of the new Flora All those of you who have worked on Historical data. (e.g. Archives, Herbaria, Libraries etc)

Where are we now? Progress in 2012 In March we had a target of 390,000 records overall. Focus on missing Sussex Plant Atlas, Supplement and Scarce Plant Register missing species. Target old and new Hieracium records. Target under-recorded habitats.

What did we achieve? We now have in excess of 394,000 records. A good number of ‘missing’ species were searched for and added or reported, ‘not found’. A good number of Hieracium species were recorded and verified. Under-recorded habits were targeted (e.g. The Adur Valley)

Now what? General Please ensure all electronic records for 2013 are sent regularly to PAH, and by 01-12-2013 Please ensure all paper records/recording cards are sent to AGH by 01-12-2013

Now what? General Please can ‘Hectad Adopters’ send an annotated copy of the ‘search requirements’ document you received in 2010, updating the progress of the targeted searches within their tetrads. If you have searched but cannot find a plant it is essential to say so and try to give a reason for its absence Annotations in Green please and send to PAH by 01-12-2013. [Snail mail or e-mail]

Recording in 2013 Briefly: We will be continuing to record in 2013, but with specific focus. It is going to be more of the targeted recording, with missing species and under-recorded habitats the first priority. The number 300 is no longer significant.

Recording in 2013 Outline: We need to spend 2013 focusing on Species missing from: The Sussex Plant Atlas (1980). The Plant Altus Supplement (1990). Sussex Rare Plant Register (2001). Specific requests from Mike or Paul

Recording in 2013 Detail: The previous publications should be straight forward, with information on the website and in the Hectad adopters lists. However, there are likely to be special requests from the VC Recorders, from several perspectives:-

Recording in 2013 Detail: Requests for information and material for Critical Species. (e.g. Rubus, Taraxacum, Euphrasia, Cotoneaster and Hieracium). These will be requests for records, specimens and plant material, site-specific and species specific searches etc.

Recording in 2013 Detail: 2. A large volume of work has been done on historical data. (Herbaria searches, documentation, historical record sets, personal correspondence, archive and literature searches), which have generated a number of questions regarding data accuracy & quality, continued existence of specific colonies and determination. (e.g. Mentha longifolia at Bexhill)
