Teaching as a Profession Warm Up Think about what Mr. Pavic and Mrs. Hynes discussed with you. Answer these to help you with today’s timeline project! What year does my current teaching certificate expire? (end being valid?) Name my 3 certification areas. What is the highest degree I hold? Cool Down: What do you have questions about for certification? Daily Objective(s): We will determine our career and educational paths. Day 17 Unit 1: Introduction to Teaching

Go here… http://mrruarkearthscience.weebly.com/

You will create a digital timeline using ReadWriteThink! You must include your… High school career (this class, graduation, 1 or more date of importance) College attendance (name of college/university, major(s), length of attendance) Determine when you will take Praxis 1 and 2 (fall and spring of senior year in college) Date of receiving your Standard Professional I Certificate (fall after graduation) Date of hire, location of your first teaching position (school or district!) and what grade/subject! Start and finish and location of your Master’s Degree (must start WITHIN 5 YEARS of graduating college) For example: Walden University, 2014-2017 When you receive your Advanced Professional Certificate (when you finish Master’s) Retirement (usually 30-35 years after first hiring at around age 65) At least 2-3 other dates of importance (coaching, having kids, etc.)

Wednesday’s Task #2 You will get in a group of 3-4. You will read one of the “Opinions of Teachers” articles (either a, b, c, or d) You will create a poster with a: Title about the brief article (“Feelings of Administrators about Teachers”, for example) How your segment of society views teachers (2-3 items) Provide a data-based fact/results of a study/survey (using numbers) that gives information Whether you agree or disagree with how your segment of society views teachers and WHY you agree or disagree!! Be prepared to share your findings. Everyone needs to say at least one thing!

Friday’s Quiz: Need to Know (Lessons 1.1-1.2) Intrinsic motivations Extrinsic motivations Identifying if a motivation is extrinsic or intrinsic Explaining that teachers (in general) are motivated more by intrinsic motivations (Lesson 1.3) Real encounters Vicarious experiences Guidance Reflection (Lesson 1.5) Teachers in Society (general concepts)

Today’s Tasks We will examine “Sources of Useful Experience” for teachers (1.3) We will finish our tri-fold brochures if not done already. We will turn in (email and upload) our finished brochures. We will spend some time at the end analyzing more of TEACH. Tomorrow we will review for Friday’s quiz, discuss Thursday’s visitors, and look at the “Opinions about Teachers and Teaching” through a divide-and-conquer activity!

Interviews Today: Mr. Lewis (Special Education) Travis, Tyler Room E113 Ms. Dittrich (French) Logan, Dilan Media Center Mrs. Cooper (English) Alaria Media Center Mrs. Turner (English) Morgan R, Cynthia Room E215 Mrs. Kantzes (Latin) Cora Room F206 (or F203) Mr. Donaway (Math) Vercilia Mrs. Lewis (Admin, former PE/Health) Becca, Morgan R Office

Schedule for tomorrow: Come to class as usual We will hand out lanyards and interview forms I’ll tell you which room to go to You’ll go interview your teacher You will return to this classroom We will discuss our interview results, findings, etc. We will finish up the week’s tasks!

Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivations Remember… Intrinsic motivations are internal motivations that give psychic or spiritual satisfaction one receives from work. Intrinsic = Internal, from within Some intrinsic motivations for teachers are: Working with students (of any age) Knowing you are providing an important public service Developing and implementing lessons that are effective Being intellectually stimulated about new content and/or teaching practices Seeing other teachers, staff, and students succeed in learning or other areas.

Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivations Extrinsic rewards, however, are defined as outside, public attractions such as money, prestige, and/or power. Extrinsic= From outside (Remember exit, extra) Some extrinsic motivators for teachers include: Having a summer break A decent, middle-class salary with benefits Having power over others (grades, etc.) Time-wise it is less demanding than other careers Job security in tough times Getting gifts from students, parents, and discounts from businesses

Project time: Today you will pretend like you work in Human Resources at the Wicomico County Board of Education. You are having a difficult time finding qualified teachers to come teach in Salisbury, so you need to advertise with brochures at a local job fair. You need to give some good reasons for teachers to apply in your brochure.

What you will do… You will create a tri-fold brochure to give out. You will need to go to mrruarkearthscience.weebly.com I’ll show you where to download. Open up the template. We will choose a school in Wicomico County to research. http://www.wcboe.org/instruction_student_services/schools

You need to create a tri-fold that… Advertises a school in Wicomico County. YOU CANNOT USE JMB HIGH SCHOOL! Has at least 5 intrinsic and 5 extrinsic (realistic) motivations advertised. It must contain 4 or more pictures and a logo! DOES NOT REPEAT ANY OF WHAT I ALREADY CREATED! Is well researched. The information is generally accurate! This is a project grade! It will be printed out IN COLOR by the print shop! dlruark@wcboe.org is my email address.
