Managing & Resisting Imperialism How did imperialist countries manage their colonies? French West Africa British Nigeria

Indirect Control Direct Control Imperial Management Europeans developed two methods to manage colony Indirect Control Direct Control Local rulers/officials used Foreign rulers/officials used Some self rule to develop loyal future leaders No self-rule, people need to be loyal to “parent” country Based on European laws & local laws Used only European laws, “paternalism” Keep customs & traditions Assimilate the people into “parent” country’s culture Ex: Britain, US Ex: France, Germany, Portugal Positive effects of colonization: less local warfare, increased literacy, industrialization. Negative effects: lost culture, new diseases, famine
