Common Core Standards: RI.9-10.8, SL.9-10.4 Friday, February 1st, 2019 Aim: How do we analyze the ethical dilemmas related to our new unit on the struggle for survival? Objective: Students will be able to analyze the ethical dilemmas related to our new unit. Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) What dilemmas do you deal with in high school and why? 2.) What is a dilemma that you encountered when completing the “Sinking Ship” handout with your table mates and how did you deal with this dilemma? *Show HW: class supplies (labeled, divided notebook and folder) and vocabulary flashcards.

Objective: Students will be able to analyze the ethical dilemmas related to our new unit. Agenda Do Now: Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share with the class. Discuss/Share: Captains will share the Do Now answers from their tablemates. Tables will finish presenting their “Sinking Ship” decisions and rationales. Why was this activity good preparation to study an excerpt from Night, which is a memoir about the author’s experiences during the Holocaust? What can you imagine about ethical dilemmas that people experienced in the struggle for survival during the Holocaust? Work Period: Read the “Analyzing the Text” questions on p. 314 (Collections textbook). In your LA section, write down key words and line numbers from the questions. Begin independently reading the excerpt from Night on p. 307 and begin summarizing (2-3 sentences) each page of the story. Reflections: What was one ethical dilemma that a character faced in Night?
