Monday Mantra Bell Work: Monday, January 7th 2019 Respond to the quotation. What is this meant to inspire? How can you connect that to your life? Do you agree or disagree? Explain.

A goal without a plan is just a wish. Reflect on your first semester— where do you hope to improve this semester? What is your goal? Most importantly, how will you achieve it? Respond in your notebook. Write your goal on the post it provided.

Late work/Retake Reminders This semester you are allowed ONE late assignment. 2 assessment retakes per semester Benchmark or reading quiz Multiple choice = half points possible Writing = full points possible Remember: retaking does not automatically guarantee your score will increase

To Kill A Mockingbird – Harper Lee You will be largely responsible for reading this novel on your own and outside of class. Annotations! Use sticky notes, an organized section of your notebook OR buy your own copy to write in your book. Keep track of important literary elements and their IMPACT on theme—what does Harper Lee hope to teach the reader? You are reading the first part of the novel on your own, so: Stop and ask yourself questions Identify critical moments Think about why each moment from Scout’s life needs to be shared with the reader (what’s its purpose?) Part 1 - Chapters 1-11 are due Weds, 1/16. You will have a quiz! *put this in your agenda!

Book Check Out & Anticipation Guide Fill out the book receipt, make sure you clearly write Your name ID number Book number Condition – When you come to be to get your book officially checked out, I will check your receipt and hold onto it until you return your book While I check out books, please work on the anticipation guide.

Bell Work: Tuesday, January 8th What do you know about the 1930s in America? If you can’t think of anything, wait for classmates responses!

Exploring the 1930s You will be assigned 1 of 9 historical topics related to the 1930s and the setting of To Kill A Mockingbird You should find 2-3 CREDIBLE web sources to learn all you can about the topic. On Thursday, you will be with a small group teaching this information to them and learning about the topics they researched You have today and tomorrow in the lab to complete your NEAT research notes, including cited direct quotes and paraphrases, and your works cited.
