Mineral Characteristics What is a Mineral? Mineral Characteristics What do ALL minerals have in common?

Minerals are… A solid that is naturally occurring, inorganic with a fixed chemical composition, and a crystal form.

By solid we mean… ANY object with a definite shape and a definite volume. NOT LIQUIDS OR GASES.

Naturally occurring means … an object that is found naturally on the Earth. Minerals are not made BY humans. Cement and Glass are NOT minerals. Why?

Inorganic means… Minerals are not made OF plants or animals. NOT formed from living things or the remains of living things. It is not alive, and it was never alive Minerals are not made OF plants or animals.

Definite chemical composition - Made of elements from the periodic table. -“The recipe” that cannot be changed without changing the mineral. MINERALS ARE MADE OF EXACT CHEMICAL ELEMENTS

example: Halite= salt= NaCl 1 sodium atom + 1 chlorine atom sodium by itself or chlorine by itself is poisonous but combined together in nature it is edible
