What is the Great Outdoors? Outdoor Education - Wetlands/Gardens/Geology Garden Outdoor Experience - Playground Items/Shade Outdoor Exercise - Asphalt Outdoor Enhancement - Beautification

Outdoor Education - Wetlands/Gardens/Geology Garden

Geology Garden The Helms Elementary School Outdoor Geology Garden will be an outdoor learning space located on the Helms campus. The Garden features 17 boulder-sized specimens representing the major rock types in three main classifications: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The Helms Outdoor Geology Garden will be a unique educational asset within the Houston Independent School District (HISD).

Outdoor Experience – Playground Items/Shade

Why Shade? There is none. It will improve the children’s overall enjoyment of recess in the Houston heat. The playground is more functional and safe if students are not burned by the equipment, overheated, or sunburned. Many parents have asked for playground improvements. Create a visually more inviting playground for students and new families touring the school.

Outdoor Exercise – Soccer Goals/Asphalt

Asphalt Resealing the asphalt area under the Pavilion and extending toward 22nd street to dramatically freshen-up the PE and recess area that is used on a daily basis. The area under the existing Pavilion used by Mr. E on a daily basis for PE has become old, faded and cracked. The south east corner ponds after rain. Initially the idea was to re-surface and re-grade the area, but after speaking with Mr. E & vendors, the option to reseal it appears to be the best, most cost-effective solution for our needs, although the current quote does not include drainage.
