Discounts\Sales

Percents are used every day We know that we have to pay 13% (in N.B.) sales tax. Often we find things “On Sale.” Sales are usually expressed as a “ percent off” To find the amount of the discount or price we have to pay, we have to use percent.

Finding a Percent Discount A coat is regularly priced at $125. It is on sale for 30% off. Three questions: 1. What is the amount of the discount? Estimate first. (Think 10 % is 12.50, so 30% would be around $37). What will you have to pay for it on sale? How much will you have to pay with the sales tax (13%) added?

1. How much is the discount The question is – What is 30% of 125

What is the Sales price? Subtract the discount from the original price. Original price – discount = sales price $125 – $37.50 = $ 87.50

Final Price at cash register The question is What is 13% of the sales price? .13 x $87.50 = $11.38 Add the tax to the sales price to get the final price. Sales price + tax = total price of coat $87.50 + $11.38 = $98.88

An ipod touch is regularly $199. It is on sale for 25% off. What is the amount of the discount? What is the sales price? What will you pay with HST?

A laptop cost $449.99. It is on sale with 40% off. What is the amount of the discount? What is the sales price? What is the price with HST?

Which is the Better Deal? Walmart has a TV on sale at 20% off the regular price of $399.99 Future shop has the same TV on sale at 10% off the regular price of $345.99. Which is the better deal?

A sweater is 40% off. The sales clerk says you can buy it for the discount or just take off $25. The sweater is regularly priced $50. Which is the better deal?
