Figure 1 Contraceptive effects of cytotoxic compounds administered to adult female Sprague-Dawley rats: mating, pregnancy, and fertility indices. These indices are all expressed as percentages ± SEM. The mating index (represents mating activity) equals number of sperm-positive females divided by the number paired (× 100); the pregnancy index (representing pregnancies with or without recognized matings) is the number of pregnant females (those having embryos dead or alive) divided by the numbers paired (× 100). The fertility index (representing the successful matings) is the number of pregnant females divided by the number of females that were sperm positive. ∗P<.05. ■, 0.9% saline; , erythromycin (70 mg/kg); □, erythromycin (280 mg/kg); , 1% methylcellulose; , quinacrine (350 mg/kg). Figure 2 Contraceptive effects of cytotoxic compounds administered to adult female Sprague-Dawley rats: number of corpora lutea per sperm-positive female, total number of implants (resorptions plus dead embryos plus live embryos) per pregnant female, and mean (± SEM) percent preimplantation loss. Mean preimplantation loss is considered in pregnant females only and was calculated as number of corpora lutea minus total implants divided by number of corpora lutea (× 100). Note that each corpus luteum is assumed to represent an ovulation. Thus, each ovum that was not fertilized or did not implant was a “preimplantation loss.” Numbers in parentheses are number of females. ∗P<.05. See Figure 1 legend for bar identification. Fail.
