Test 1 Outline

Define biodiversity. What is a species? Explain the 3 levels of biodiversity. Why is biodiversity at risk? How does the loss of biodiversity affect humans? Define biological classification. What is taxonomy?

How did Carolus Linnaeus contribute to taxonomy? What is a dichotomous key? Know how to use a dichotomous key to classify organisms. Explain binomial nomenclature. List the 7 taxonomic levels. How are the taxonomic levels a hierarchy? Using an example, explain how knowing scientific names can provide useful information about the similarities between species.

Compare how traditional classification and modern taxonomy group organisms. Define phylogeny. What is a phylogenetic tree? Know how to interpret a phylogenetic tree. What is a clade? Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. What is a domain? What are the characteristics of each of the domains and kingdoms? What is endosymbiosis?
