Luke 19 : 1-10 Learning to Do Good

Verses 1-4 Doing Yourself Harm Jesus was going through Jericho, where a man named Zacchaeus lived. He was in charge of collecting taxes and was very rich.  3-4Jesus was heading his way, and Zacchaeus wanted to see what he was like. But Zacchaeus was a short man and could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree.

In order for people to Do Good, we need both humility and self-confidence. People who don’t respect themselves as God’s children have a hard time Doing Good for others.

People who do not respect themselves 1. Punish themselves 2. Defeat or Injure themselves 3. Destroy other people 4. Fall into Ambivalence 5. Keep Themselves Overly Busy

Verses 5-7 Doing Yourself Good When Jesus got there, he looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, hurry down! I want to stay with you today."   6Zacchaeus hurried down and gladly welcomed Jesus.  Everyone who saw this started grumbling, "This man Zacchaeus is a sinner! And Jesus is going home to eat with him."

Doing Good for others is not just giving to them. It’s Respecting and Nurturing them so they can Grow to their Potential to Do all the Good they can.

“Love others as much as you love yourself.” (Leviticus 19:18). instead of yourself.”

People who Do Good for themselves know how to Do Good for others.

The best Good Thing you can Do for yourself and for everyone else is to open your life to Jesus.

Once you see that your life is important, it makes sense to give it to Jesus.

Verses 8-10 Finding Self-Respect Later that day Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "I will give half of my property to the poor. And I will now pay back four times as much to everyone I have ever cheated."  Jesus said to Zacchaeus, "Today you and your family have been saved, because you are a true son of Abraham.    10The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are lost."

Face Jesus. Drop your defenses. Be Honest. Ask Jesus to restore your humanity. Receive your dignity from Jesus. Extend the mercy and peace Jesus gives you to others.
