The Modern Language Association (MLA) establishes values for acknowledging sources used in a research paper. MLA citation style uses a simple two-part parenthetical documentation system for citing sources: Citations in the text of a paper point to the alphabetical Works Cited list that appears at the end of the paper. Together, these references identify and credit the sources used in the paper and allow others to access and retrieve this material. (Johnson 199)

Citations: In-text One author: (Walker 18). Two authors: (Walker and Allen 23). Three or more authors: (Kosslyn et al. 45) No author (use shortened version of title): (“Using MLA”). Website (no page number): (Johnson). Indirect source: According to Lacan, “The unconscious is structured like a language” (qtd. in Smith 34).

Citations: Works Cited Page In text citations must be listed in the works cited page Entries are listed alphabetically Use hanging indentation

Citations: Works Cited Page MLA 8th Edition: Changes to the Works Cited With understanding to today’s world of combined publication formats, the 8th edition of MLA offers a new model for building the works-cited list based on core elements of a source. In lieu of providing instructions for each entry based on publication format, the MLA Handbook provides this template (on the left) and asks for writers to compile entries with their best discernment.
