Doing It Differently Workshop 2

Understanding People’s Why’s What are people’s motivations Break down stereotypes Address fear of failure in individuals Find people’s passions Support people to form habit/routine Don’t want to engage the same “active” people Finding that more people are accessing physical activity for mental health What is the stage before people access formal activity/sport/exercise Help move people along the physical activity spectrum Supporting people to have a purpose in life and link active

Understand the culture of communities What do communities react to? Understand families dilemmas prioritising financial decisions Community champions Create communities – not just geographical How to respond to a community

Communication, Communication, Communication Need to overcome barriers Positivity How to reach Identify specific groups that aren’t engaging Need visibility Needs to be tailored Use testimonials – best way to motivate What if people don’t want to access ?

Safe environment Safe, attractive places that encourage social connectedness provide best conditions for active living Active travel needs to be the norm – need to feel safe

Working across the system It’s complex – “in it together” It’s about our ability to work together Need to focus on what we can influence/control Can’t do all of this individually Don’t measure success with the same criteria We need to work with local people/organisations/clubs to change their practice to be accessible for all How do we communicate to affect other parts of the system. Need to create a network to link – speed dating type events?? Virtual??
