Amendments 1-10 to the Constitution The Bill of Rights Amendments 1-10 to the Constitution

Amendment I -There are 5 parts to the first amendment:

Freedom of Speech Being able to speak freely without fear of punishment by the government (Does not protect you if you make threatening or untrue statements.)

Freedom of the Press Freedom to express ideas through books, magazines, newspapers, TV, radio, internet, etc…

Freedom of Religion The US government must allow Americans to practice any religion they wish. (Or none at all.)

Freedom of Assembly Americans have the right to assemble (gather in groups) to express an opinion as long as the assembly is peaceful. (Example: Protesting)

Freedom to Petition (Petition: Written document) The ability to express one’s ideas to the government

Amendment II -This is the right to “keep and bear arms” (own a weapon) -There are many limits to this right!

Amendment III -Americans cannot be forced to house & feed soldiers -(We didn’t have this freedom during the Revolutionary War!)

Amendment IV -Protects Americans against “unreasonable searches & seizures” -Police must show you a warrant first!

Amendment V -No “double jeopardy” (being tried 2 times for the same crime) -The right to remain silent (“plead the fifth”)

Amendment VI -If accused of a crime, the trial must be “speedy” & public (not held in secret) -Accused person must be told what they are being accused of

Amendment VI ALSO… -An accused person has the right to a lawyer. If he/she cannot afford one, tax money will be used to get one for them

Amendment VII - Individuals have the right to a “jury trial” (if both sides agree, they can just allow the judge to decide the outcome.)

Amendment VIII Bail cannot be excessive (too much $$ for the situation) “Cruel & Unusual punishment” is not allowed

Amendment IX -Citizens have rights in addition to those listed in the Constitution (Ex: Right to privacy)

Amendment X -Any powers not specifically given to the National government goes to State governments. (Keeps the US gov’t from getting too much power)
