CAS 101 Week 1 Careers in Website Development & Design Certificate and Degree Program at PCC

Introductions On the sheet of paper (or in an email message if not attending the first class) answer these questions: Name Contact Email Experience at PCC Are you taking other classes this term? Have you taken other classes in prior terms? Are you enrolled in the Web program, or just checking things out? What are your PCC goals? Do you have any experience in website development (have you created a website or Web pages)? What is your design background outside of Web design (art, graphic design, etc.)? Do you have any experience in programming (Visual Basic, C, Java, etc.)? Week 1 - CAS 101

Course Overview Week 1: Introduction to the course and Website Development and Design Program and a look at careers in the website development & design field; overview of certificates & degree offered at PCC Week 2: Computer/Software requirements for web students; overview of GradPlan; meet with an advisor Week 3: Overview of Portfolio requirements, Web design as a profession Week 4: Demonstration of technology tools (Brackets, FileZilla, WH4S File Manager) Week 5: Turn in your Academic Plan if you haven’t already. Week 1 - CAS 101

What This Course Is: An overview of the web program at PCC An introduction to the tools needed to be successful in the web program A chance to set up a plan for your PCC education A chance for you to learn : about web careers & opportunities in the field of website development & design about Web classes at PCC about Portfolio requirements about software requirements Required for all web certificates and the 2-year degree A tool to help you succeed Week 1 - CAS 101

What This Course Is Not: Optional for web certificates or degree A “cohort” of students who you are required to stick with – although you will see a lot of the same students in many classes A replacement for meeting with an advisor You will not learn HOW to create a website create a website have a textbook create a portfolio Week 1 - CAS 101

Design and Development Designer A Web designer is someone who designs websites Focused on the front-end of the website Concerned with how the site “looks” and how the site visitors interact with the site Uses design principles to create an appealing site Understands usability and create sites that are easy to navigate Developer A Web developer is someone who programs Web pages Focused on the back-end of the website Concerned with how the site “works” and how customers get things done Understands server technology and how to keep a site up and running Uses programming skills to make a website “work”

Web Assistant I 13 Credits Can be completed in 1 or 2 terms All classes count towards other certificates or degree CAS 101: Intro to the Web Program CAS 110: Web Graphics CAS 111W: Beginning Website Design: WordPress CAS 180: Search Engine Optimization CAS 206: HTML and CSS

Web Assistant II 24 Credits Can be completed in 2 or 3 terms Includes courses in Web Assistant I, plus: CAS 215: CSS and Pre-Processors CAS 242: UX/UI Design for the Web CAS 213: JavaScript and jQuery for Designers CAS 280W: Co-Op (1 credit total)

1-Year Certificate 52 Credits Can be completed in 4 or 5 terms Includes courses in Web Assistant II, plus: CAS 225: PHP and MySQL for Designers CAS 222: Integrated Website Design Business Course (choice of one of those 3) Writing Course (choice of one of those 2) CAS 280W: Co-Op (2 credits total) 12 Elective Credits (choose from focus areas)

2-Year Degree 97 Credits Can be completed in 2 years (including summer terms) Includes courses in 1-year certificate, plus: CAS 285: Capstone BA 223: Marketing WR 121: English Composition (college requirement) 16 Additional Elective credits 16 General Education Requirement credits CAS 280W: Co-Op (4 credits total)
