THE GREAT DESERT ESCAPADE OF 2018 IN A DEPARTURE FROM OUR USUAL APPROACH OF ‘HOOKING UP A WIRE AND DX-ING’ A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH FOR A CHANGE: ---WE ACTUALLY HAD WRITTEN PLANS!

THE GREAT DESERT ESCAPADE OF 2018 Notes for setting up Excel template: Note starts and stops of audio recording Verify starts and stops of Perseus and NetSDR plus reports of time stamps   CALIBRATE COMPUTER TIME W/INTERNET AND AUDIO RECORDERS G. EVALUATE NRIG CAT-5 BEV AND COMPARE TO REF BEV At this point both the Ref Bev and the Cat-5 Bev have been evaluated from both ends, both terminated and unterminated. In addition, signal strengths, termination resistances have been documented, and null depths have been derived. NEXT: Cat-5 pair 1 (twisted together) is the antenna; Cat-5 pair 2 is the return-line. Pair 3 and 4 Cat-5 pairs are terminated at the shack end with 100 Ω resistors and so is pair 2 when not being used. This test involves coordinated switching of a tapped transformer to different ratios, followed by adjustment of single-turn 100 Ω null pot. These various adjustments will happen in coordination at both ends of the Cat-5, watching effects of these adjustments on null depths and watching for unexpected interaction of one end’s adjustment with the other. I’M AN EMPIRICAL GUY WHO WOULD JUST GO AHEAD AND MEASURE BUT WE AGREED ON THE NEED FOR DETAILED PLANS. WE ALSO AGREED ON THE NEED FOR A REFERENCE ANTENNA FOR OUR COMPARISONS
