This Workshop focuses on ages 8-12. Useful to students at any age. About this Workshop How listening to music can lead to creative expression in the classroom. This Workshop focuses on ages 8-12. Useful to students at any age. Antonio Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’ is one of the most famous & loved music works. The music descriptions of nature make this work ideal for kids.

STEP 1. GETTING TO KNOW WITH THE MUSIC

Listening Maps Structure Pictures, emotions, stories etc Orchestration 1730

Kids can draw their own pictures Puzzle Kids can draw their own pictures Black & White Map

STEP 2. CREATIVE INVOLVEMENT

Educational approach “Using strategies in which children solve problems leads to the formation of mental constructs or schemas that are much deeper and more well-formed than approaches that are completely teacher-directed” (Campbell, P. S., Scott-Kassner, C. (2006). Music in Childhood. USA: Thomson-Schirmer, pp 235).

Ways of creative involvement Verbal expression (conversation, writing of prose, poems, dialogues and stories.) Visual expression (drawing/painting, making a score, musical puzzles.) Kinaesthetic expression (free movement that describes music, creation of a choreography.) A new music experience (composing music before or after the listening of the selected piece.) (Campbell & Scott-Kassner, 2006)

Visual Expression

With simple instruments, sound objects and voices Making music With simple instruments, sound objects and voices Music education approaches inspired by experimental music of the last 60 years (Cage, Oliveros, Cardew κ.α.) use all kinds of sounds. They emphasize in the process of music making and not in the ‘product’. Students with or without typical music knowledge can feel free to play music without anxiety and fear for making a ‘mistake’.
