Percent Grade 6

Percents What does percent mean? Percent means out of 100 If we write the percent as a fraction without reducing, what will the denominator be? 100 Writing a Percent as a decimal, where will the decimal point be in comparison to where it was in the percent? Two places to the left of where the percent was because we have divided the percent by 100, which makes it smaller.

Percents & Decimals Converting Percents to Decimals Move the decimal two space to the left 25% = _______ = _____ 82% = _______ = _____ 7.3% = _______ = _____ 0.55 % = ______ = ____ Fraction Decimal

Percent Practice If you get 85 questions right out of 100, write your score as a ratio and a decimal. Now write your score as a percent.

How to find a percent of a number There are 2 ways: Set up and solve a proportion Convert Percent to a decimal and multiply

1. Set up and Solve a proportion Find the 67% of 90 1. Set up a proportion with 67 as the numerator and 100 as denominator. Since we want to find part of 90, then 90 represents the 100% of the other ratio. *important to note that when using a proportion, the % sign is no longer need*

1. Set up and solve a proportion Find 145% of 210

2. Convert Percent to a decimal and multiply Find 8% of 50 1. Convert 8% to a decimal. Then multiply the decimal by 50.

2. Convert the percent to a decimal and multiply Find 0.5% of 36

Use either method. Find 3% of 12 Find 9% of 80

Real World Application The estimated world population in 2001 was 6,157 million. About 40% of the people were 10 or younger. What was the approximate number of people 10 or younger to the nearest million? (Use either method but show your work)

Sales and Withholding Tax The price of a CD player at Best Buy is $31.99 and it’s on sale for 25% off. Tell the amount of the discount and then tell the sale price. Next, you check out at the register and the sales tax is 7%. What is your final price of the CD player?

Sale and Withholding Tax Three friends go to Applebee’s for dinner. The total bill $93. The tax rate is 7.5%. Tell the amount of the tax and then tell the amount of the bill at Applebee’s. Next, the three friends decide to leave a 15% tip for the waiter. Tell how much tip they leave. Next, tell how much each friend needs to pay to split the total bill plus tax and tip evenly.
