What is Reading 3D ?

Objectives What is reading 3D? How is it assessed? What does it include for Kinder? How can you help your student?

Why is Reading so Important? Reading is the foundation for all academics. Reading is a life long skill. As adults we read all day long. (road signs, text messages, emails, recipes, directions, etc.)

how is Reading 3d administered? What is Reading 3d? A test that is given to all students in kinder through 2nd grade, 3 times a year There are two portions of the test, DIBELS and TRC how is Reading 3d administered? Students are tested individually in a testing room The DIBELS portion is a set of fluency tests, each test is 1 minute long The TRC portion is not timed

dibels First Sound Fluency (FSF) Letter Naming Fluency (LNF) BOY & MOY

Important things to know

FICTION vs. NONFICTION Not real Real Made up characters BME (beginning, middle, and end) Illustrations Problem and Solution Theme / Message / Morale Real Main Idea and Details Facts Photos, Charts, Graphs True Information Table of Contents Glossary, Index

How can you help? After reading a fiction text, ask your student to practice retelling the story by saying “start in the beginning and tell what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.” After reading a non-fiction text, ask your student to practice recalling the story by saying “now tell me what this book was about – tell me the main idea and 2 important details.” After reading either type of text, ask your student comprehension questions related to the text they just read (fiction – character feelings/setting/etc; non fiction – facts/details learned in story or in pictures)

How can you help? Work on letter recognition and letter sounds (not in ABC order) Work on sight words (read, spell, read) Read daily with your student. If they come to a word they do not know ask them to use decoding strategies to figure out the word (sounding out, use pictures, look for a pattern)

Where can you be practicing? In the car on the way to or from school In the doctors / dentists office Long car ride out of town / plane ride At the breakfast, lunch, or dinner table At a traffic light or stop sign Shopping at the grocery story At a restaurant On the way to soccer, dance, baseball, gymnastics, taekwondo, church, etc. You can practice ANYWHERE!!!
