How to Avoid Abusing Someone Grade 9 Sexual Assault: Lesson Three (OVERHEAD: How to Avoid Abusing Someone) How to Avoid Abusing Someone Recognize the early warning signs of abuse in yourself. Be direct about what you want. Don’t assume you know what your partner wants. If he or she says no to sex, believe it! Be aware that alcohol and drugs impair your judgment and self-control. Get out of an abusive situation and allow yourself time to cool down. Get help from someone who cares about you: parents, friends, teachers or counsellors. If abusive behaviour is a problem for you, get professional help.
