Senate Bill 34 and House Bill 526 Cyber Charter School Funding Senate Bill 34 and House Bill 526

Senate Bill 34 and House Bill 526 If a District offers a cyber –based program equal in scope and content to an existing publicly chartered cyber school and a student in that District attends a cyber charter school instead of the District’s cyber based program, the District shall not be required to provide funding to pay for the student’s attendance at the cyber charter school

Midd-West Cyber Academy average cost per student: $1,500 Regular Education Student: $10,965.62 Special Education Student: $27,073.30 Regular Education Student MWSD: $9,897.46 Special Education Student MWSD: $25,190.56 Midd-West Cyber Academy average cost per student: $1,500 Reference: 21st Century Cyber Charter School, May 2019 invoice

Annual budget reduction of $900,000.00 Fiscal Impact for MWSD if SB 34 and HB 526 pass: Annual budget reduction of $900,000.00 MWCA: $63,595 44 Full-Time Students 24 Part-Time Students 51 Single Classes Approximately 3 mils of real-estate tax

Imagine the impact to the entire State! There are 500 school districts in PA. Some pay significantly more in cyber school costs than MWSD. PA taxpayers could save well over half a Billion dollars per year!

Legislators report that they are not hearing support for Senate Bill 34 or House Bill 526. Charter schools are “for profit” schools and have significant revenue to hire lobbyist that keep legislators tuned into what they want them to hear. School Districts need to energize taxpayers to speak up to legislators. Representative Fred Keller (570) 837-0052 (717) 787-3443 Senator John Gordner (570) 784-3464 (717) 787-9715
