DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A MAP AND A GLOBE Objective: define the differences and similarities between a map and globe Similarities Maps and globes often help you better understand what you read. Maps and globes are both “tools” which are used to help you answer questions about locations of countries and cities, oceans and rivers, mountains and deserts. Maps and globes also help you make comparisons and determine distances and directions between the places in the world.

Differences Globes are models, or small copies of the earth because the provide very accurate information. Looking at a globe is a lot like looking at appoint in outer space. On a globe, shapes and relative sizes are shown correctly. Directions and relative distances are also shown correctly.  Globes are especially valuable tools for learning about the earth. Maps are drawings on flat surfaces of all or part of the earth. Maps can be folded or rolled. They can be carried and stored easily. A map can show the world so that it can be seen all at once, On a globe, only half the world can be seen at a time.
