Summarizing

What is a summary? a brief statement or account of the main points/details of a text. Summaries retell the story in a shorter way! Summaries include only the most important details!

SWBST We will use the Somebody Wanted But So Then strategy to learn how to write summaries.

Somebody Wanted But So Then… Somebody - Who is the MAIN CHARACTER? Wanted – What did that character WANT? What is their purpose? But - What was the problem/conflict? So - How did the character try to solve the problem? Then – What was the resolution to the problem?

How will you see it on your tests? Which three sentences belong in a summary of the article? Which of these statements should be included in an accurate summary of the passage? Which three quotations will be included in an accurate summary of the passage? Choose three statements that would be included in a summary of the text. Which of the following best summarizes the poem? – Usually one statement answer choice
