Communication & Health Communication Belal Uddin

Communication : Our Understanding! Oldest join action of human beings - We spend 80% of our life time in active communication, rest 20% in passive - But our success rate is only 30% meaning - in 70% cases we fail - Because, in most cases, messages are misunderstood, misinterpreted, disliked, distorted and rejected Meaning; - WE FALL TO TRANSFER MEANING

Our Understanding! COMMUNICATION is thus sharing/transferring information/feeling with meaning with a purpose, say, for an intended change.

Humanistic approach of Communication! - Openness willingness to self disclosure, honesty, owing - Empathy feel with/as - Supportiveness descriptive, provisional - Positiveness attitudinal, stroking - Equality acceptance, approval

Health Communication: Our Understanding! Not a traditional communication intervention (s) but targeted one/multiple health behaviors - Designed behavior-based health communication activities - Must have a significant positive impact on health-related attitudes, beliefs and behaviors - Composed with change, risk and crisis - Building from long-term development of this field of knowledge

Health Communication: Our Understanding! Health communication is communicating health messages using; Human Mass media Interpersonal small group, or community - aim to change people's knowledge, attitudes, and/or behaviors; for example: - Increase risk perception - Reinforce positive behaviors - Influence social norms - Increase availability of support and needed services - Empower individuals to change or improve their health conditions etc.

Our Understanding! BCC SBCC Behavior Change + Health Communication (strategic communication to persuade individuals to modify behavior, make better choices) C4D Development Communication (combining behavior change with social mobilization and advocacy) SBCC Health + Development Communication (focus on context as enabling environment, participatory methods, less message more dialogue)

Don’t overload people with too much information…… Instead focus on changing health behaviors through effective SBCC and community mobilization !

Thank You
