Assumed Prior Knowledge Students should already be able to: Recite the number name sequence initially to 10, then to 20 Be familiar with counting a collection of objects to 10, then to 20 State the last number spoken as the size of the collection (cardination principle) Recognise the symbolic numerals when printed or written from 0 to 10, then to 20 Write the numerals for numbers 0 to 10 (c) Professor Pete's Classroom, 2017. Counting with Objects 1 5 Numbers are abstract entities that have to be mentally processed and understood Counting involves connecting the sequence of numbers with individual physical objects Introduce zero when counting backwards 3 2 4

Number Lines Use Number lines are excellent for counting activities, giving an uninterrupted view of the sequence of numbers. Using a number line use for students It is recommended to use lines with numbers on the top: This allows for fingers to touch the place for each number without obscuring the numeral. (N.B. this is not an issue on whiteboards) A number line shows where a number is in relation to another; for example, 9 is after 8 Number lines can also show the difference between nearby numbers quickly and efficiently; for example, the difference between 8 and 6 is 2 Number lines do not, however, show the value of the number (the actual number of items it represents), so number line activities should be used in conjunction with ten frame activities and place value introduction of the “teen” numbers. Check that students are pointing directly to each numeral on the number line as it is spoken. Ensure students are not counting ahead or pointing ahead. Check that students are not pointing to the spaces, but rather the actual marks on the line. Ask students to lift their finger and move to the next number, rather than just sliding along the line. Students need to feel of the hops that constitute counting on each number.
