Rigid lens complications Week 12

Rigid lens complications As the technician, you are responsible for teaching the patient how to care for their lenses. Sometimes, no matter how diligent you are, complications happen. It is important for you, as the technician, to know when the patient needs to see the doctor and if necessary, reinstruct the patient to avoid any further complications. Most gas perm complications are the same as soft contact lens complications, but, I do want to review!

Rigid lens complications Mechanical trauma Trauma- abrasion

Rigid lens complications Poor fitting lens Poor edge blending

Rigid lens complications vascular/inflammatory reactions due to hypoxia Stromal complications- severe hypoxia – Dk value

Rigid lens complications Corneal ulcer- fungal pseudomonas

Rigid lens complications Broken rigid lens Protein build up on lens

Rigid lens complications Solution toxemia Keratitis, vascular response

Rigid lens complications Remember, take your time fitting, verifying, and making modifications to avoid complications! Always make sure the patient fully understands how to clean and care for the CL’s and knows the risks of not taking care of them properly. All of the complications you have seen can be avoided, simply by taking your time and educating the patient!

Next week- Lens verification Read chapter 9 in text, pages98-111 for next week’s lecture. Module 36 and mock patient for homework.
