DRESS FOR HEALTH CARE/ NURSING SUCCESS Health Care Professionals touch more lives than they realize or encounter face to face.

Body Art…

October 14, 2008 R-8 school district to require employees to cover tattoos Joplin R-8 Board of Education members Tuesday night gave administrators the OK to change wording in the districts employment policy to not allow any part of a tattoo to show. The board also wants to make that policy apply to all district employees, not just teachers.

My hospital system has this policy: All tattoos must be covered, either by clothing appropriate for the specific job, or by make-up that is appropriate for the workplace, while on the clock. Any hair that is artifically colored must be one that is naturally occuring (no neon purple, acid green, shocking blue, etc), or a surgical hat is to be worn during the duration of the color, and any facial/mouth/tongue piercings must be removed while on the clock. Most of my coworkers have some kind of tattoo, be it a small ankle one or a tramp stamp, but it's covered when they have on hospital scrubs. We are also not to wear fragrances and we are to try and use unscented hairspray, lotion, etc while at work So… What are typical policies in Health Care?

NURSING IS A PROFESSIONAL CAREER What NOT to WEAR….Especially to an INTERVIEW!~ NO skin, no cleavage No capris, jeans, shorts No flipflops, sneakers Nothing too short or too tight

WHAT DOES WORK… Women: …Suit is appropriate either pants or skirts (at or below the knee) …Blouse that buttons up or a suit blouse (shell) …Hosiery …Close toed shoes …Hair neatly done in current style or put up/ pulled back …Makeup should be clean and fresh looking, not overdone …Good hygiene

WHAT STANDS OUT? Who would you HIRE?

MEN… Suit or dress slacks with jacket Button down shirt with a tie Ties should blend with the suit not jump out Shined shoes Calf high or Knee socksTie Minimal jewelry, no earrings, other piercings Hair should be neatly trimmed, including any facial hair

FACE IT Your face should always be what an interviewer remembers about you from the interview. There should be nothing other than your face that jumps out at an interviewer
