On the basis of origin, drainage system is divided into: Himalayan Rivers are mostly perennial and youth having V shaped valley (gorges and canyons) and depositional features like deltas whereas Peninsular rivers are seasonal and do not have extensive networks of tributaries. HIMALAYAN RIVERS PENINSULAR RIVERS
1) Himalayan River System Major Rivers: Indus Ganga Brahmaputra Source/Origin: Manasarovor Lake Length (3180km) River passes through states (Jammu & Kashmir) National river of Pakistan: Tributaries: Sutlej, Shyok, Gilgit and Zaskar Sutlej is largest tributary of river Indus. RIVER INDUS
River Ganga Origin/Source: Gangotri glacier at Gomukh. Length (2525km) Headquaters : Bhagirathi Bhagirathi joins Alakhnanda at Devprayag . River passes through states: Uttrakhand, Upper Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Tributaries: Yamuna, Ramganga, Gomati, Ghagra, Rapti, Gandak, Kosi. Ghagra is largest tributary of river Ganga. Yamuna joins river Ganga at Allahabad, Tributaries of river Yamuna: Banas, Sind, Betwa, Ken.
River Brahmaputra River is called Tsangpo in Tibet. River is called Siang in Arunachal Pradesh. River is known as Dihang in Assam. River is known as Jamuna in Bangladesh. Origin/Source: Chemayungdung Glacier. Length (3848km) Tributaries: Manas, Dhubri, Subansiri, Lohit, Dibang, Tista, Dhansiri.
2) Peninsular River System River is known as Dakshin Ganga. River Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri are east flowing peninsular river. Basin of Godavari is largest among peninsular rivers and second largest river in India. River flows towards south east. East Flowing Peninsular River
West Flowing Peninsular River Narmada and Tapti are most important west flowing peninsular river. Basin of Narmada is largest.
