A GOOD THING FOR WHICH TO HAVE A REPUTATION ACADEMIC HONESTY A GOOD THING FOR WHICH TO HAVE A REPUTATION Based on work by the Independent Curriculum Group Licensed Under Creative Commons Attribution—Non-Commercial—Share Alike

Why is academic dishonesty wrong? Failure to attribute properly robs a creator of credit and sometimes money Work completed with the improper aid of others will not lead to effective learning or understanding Abuse of the collaborative process is simply unfair to others as well as to yourself

PLAGIARISM The unauthorized or unacknowledged use of ideas or words that are not one’s own in order to seek an academic benefit. Copying from a source that you don’t acknowledge Copying from a peer

CHEATING The unauthorized use of notes or the use of information gathered, applied, or accessed in a dishonest fashion in order to seek an academic benefit Crib notes on a test or quiz Sneaking to get access to questions or answers in advance Copying from a source or an unknowing peer during a test, quiz, or other assessment

ABUSE OF THE COLLABORATIVE PROCESS The reliance upon the efforts of others to seek an academic benefit to which your own efforts do not entitle you. The collaborative work process involves the principle of the sharing of an equal burden of thought and effort among students assigned or authorized to work together. Not pulling your weight on a group assignment or in group work in class Doing more than your “fair share” of work because you don’t have faith in your collaborators (your group) or because you have been coerced into doing so Shutting others out of group work: either dominating or not listening; or not valuing others’ contributions

IF I FIND A VIOLATION [BULLET POINTS OR EVEN A SECOND SLIDE EXPLAINING YOUR PROCESS AND THE DEPARTMENT’S AND SCHOOL’S POLICY AND PROCESS IF AN INSTANCE OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY IS NOTED] PLEASE NOTE: A suspension or expulsion for academic dishonesty during high school must be noted and explained on many college application forms.
