Happy Friday! Choose an essay prompt and start writing! This is the time to take a few risks and try some of the 4 strategies! Make sure you are using at least three NEW strategies from block day! Today I’m going to have a few writing conferences. If I don’t get to speak with you and you want to chat about your writing, feel free to come see me after school today, during advisory, or before school on Tuesday. We have a test essay on Tuesday/Wednesday! When you are finished, highlight the three strategies you used. On your own sheet of paper, tell me WHY you chose to place these techniques where they are. What purpose do they serve? What effect do they create? If you have time, swap essays with someone else! Give them feedback on their essay. Do they have the TEAL format? What is done well? How could they improve?

“4” Strategies Introductions and Conclusions Varied Sentence Structure Tie-ins (similar diction or metaphor/simile) Thesis Statements with semicolon and transition Connecting your examples to start your conclusion (more than just connecting with the prompt’s topic) Varied Sentence Structure Punctuation (semicolon, dash, ellipsis, use of all cap) Sentence types (intentional fragment, short/choppy simple sentences / set of three) Purposeful and Unique Examples Unique personal view or view of the world (relevant current events) Engaging and thoughtful connections between body paragraph examples
