Parental and Community Involvement November 2018

First Nations Education Governance Project Objectives: Develop our own model of education governance. Define our education system based on our principles, goals and cultural diversity. Exercise complete autonomy over our education.

Background Expert committee set up (education representatives from 22 communities). Working groups established for each area of governance (7): 60 participants, including 43 community members. Work approved at December 2013 and February 2014 general assemblies. Standards guide approved at September 2014 general assembly.

Standards Respect First Nations values, cultures and principles. Uphold First Nations governance process. Define quality education. Represent our right and responsibility to establish and maintain effective education systems.

Parental and Community Involvement What are the essential components for the governance of parental and community involvement that could contribute to student success?

Five Themes of Parental and Community Involvement Parental and community involvement policy and procedures Involvement structure Communication Recruiting Training and support

Parental and Community Involvement Policy and Procedures Standard 139: The school has a parental and community involvement policy and procedure that define its approach, values and objectives. Standard 140: The parental and community involvement policy is adopted by the appropriate decision-making bodies. Standard 141: The parental and community involvement policy is supported by an action plan. Standard 142: The policy and its action plan are subject to assessment and revision.

Involvement Structure Standard 143: An official parental and community involvement structure is put in place by the school. Standard 144: Terms of reference are established to ensure that the parental and community involvement structure functions well. Les termes de références sont le mode d’emploi d’une structure en ppc : Tshiueten

Communication Standard 145: The school has a communication strategy to inform and raise awareness among the population to parental and community involvement. Standard 146: The school establishes internal communication methods to structure the relationship between school staff members and the clientele attending the school.

Recruiting Standard 147: The school has a recruiting strategy to encourage parental and community involvement. Standard 148: The school puts a recruiting procedure in place that defines the roles, nature and duration of terms.

Training and Support Standard 149: The school makes the necessary provisions to provide training and develop abilities for operating the implemented structures. Standard 150: The school makes the necessary provisions to support the development of parenting skills related to educating children.

Is your community making parental and community involvement a priority?
