Brinksmanship If the Soviet Union attacked U.S. interest, the U.S. would retaliate The willingness to go to the brink, or edge of war Required a reliable source of nuclear weapons and airplanes United States began to strengthened its air force and began producing stockpiles of nuclear weapons

The Cold War in the Skies The Cold War affected the science and education programs of both countries 1957, Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first unmanned satellite above the Earth’s atmosphere Americans felt that they had fallen behind in science and technology Government poured money into science education

U-2 incident 1955, Eisenhower proposed that the United States and Soviet Union be able to fly over each other’s territory to guard against surprise nuclear attacks Soviet responded with a NO! CIA started a secret high-altitude spy flight over Soviet territory in planes called U-2s.

U-2 incident May 1960, the Soviets shot down a U-2 plane, and its pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was captured U-2 incident helped to heightened Cold War tensions
